Cheap head(banging?)phones BQ-605
Review of impossibly cheap BQ-605 headphones
This review is a true review as my son is visiting us in Germany with his expensive B&O headphones. Sometimes life itself writes the best stories, in this case reviews. In preparation for a very looong flight in September to Calgary and back I just purchased impossible cheap headphones on Ebay. They were delivered yesterday, and this is the opportunity to review, and compare, top and bottom of headphones.
I‘m not really a review writer but opportunity makes an author. By the way, comparison of my -noname- headphones with Bang&Olufsen headphones would be unfair if it comes to (lower level) features. The main reason for my purchase, aside from the very cheap price, was that these headphones act also as a player for music on a micro SD card. What about a radio integrated in the headphones? It‘s there, but I would prefer to listen to communication between the cockpit and the ground. Instead, a nice female voice whispers or yells (depending on the actual volume setting) mode changes of the headphones in your ear. TAKE THAT, B&O!

The micro SD card player is really interesting as it can handle micro SD cards up to 32GB. The manual says that the music files (not only mp3!) have to reside in the root directory only. This is not true as I copied parts of my main iTunes music folder to the 16GB card and the folders are played one after another. I'm missing random play but Hey! you can't have it all. A nice thing is that the player memorizes the last played music and restarts there, even if the headphones are switched off in between.
Okay, I just received a hard uppercut from B&O as B&O has active noise canceling. The BQ-605 can‘t offer this technology but the earcups are really well cushioned. So there is an surprisingly good passive noise canceling effect – and not only written in the Ebay ad.
So far the BQ-605 has the upper hand but for what are headphones good? Right, mostly to listen to music. This is the expected straight fist of B&O right into the target. Music quality is not comparable. This was expected, as both headphones are playing in quite different leagues. For a lower end headphone and not even 14 Euros the sound quality is really good but as I said, not comparable to B&O.
The Bottom Line
For holidays and / or older people like me with already not soo perfect hearing anymore I really can recommend this headphones. They are not perfect aside of the a little more bass missing sound – but definitely better as an old fashioned phone earpiece;-) Remember: don‘t compare potatos and pineapples – several hundreds of Euros against a litte more as ten Euros. That would be unfair – so both headphones are a winner!

Half a year is gone since this review. Actually we have now a brand new year 2017!
ReplyDeleteIn September I did travel from Frankfurt to Calgary and back. This is a really looong flight and so I used that headphones loaded with a memory card and a full load of my MP3's to advance the flow of time a little. To my surprise the headphones kept on working even as I spilled a half glass of Coke dangerously close to the headphones. (I took them off during the meal)
Most of my Bottom Line remains unchanged. Unfortunately I have to emphasize that the audio quality of the BQ-605 headphones is really lousy. I had to 'pump up the volume' but in any case the jet engines were louder;-) Anyway, they were the right phones at the right time. Expensive intercontinental air travel and expensive new headphones - that had been one expensive item too much...
By the way, just a few days before I've got new headphones as a Christmas present. Samsung Leve On pro - Great headphones, but a different story
